About Moi
My Name is Brittany, and I'm 23yrs old. I was diagnosed with Lupus when I was 15, and then diagnosed with RA, when I was 18. I also got married when I was 18, and I'm enjoying my happily ever after with my hubby! When I got married, I was slim and trim...But not for long. After getting married, I started to gain a LOT of weight! In 1yr, I gained 50lbs! Finally, I went to the Doctor, where I discovered I have low thyroid. After being put on medicine, my weight gain slowed down, although over the next 3yrs, I gained an additional 26lbs. When I was 20yrs old, I got yet another diagnoses of Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome. That's 4 diagnoses in a 5yr period, if you lost count. They all effect my weight, in one way or another. Add on top of that, my love affair with food, and every 1 of those 76lbs gained was accounted for. Being 76lbs over weight is unhealthy for anyone, but it was especially unhealthy for me, and my health issues. Since starting this blog, in Jan-2010, I have lost 40lbs! I'm a new, slimmer, and healthier me! Before losing weight, I was told I needed knee replacements. Losing weight was the ONLY tool I had to help me hold off on that life changing surgery. Since losing 40lbs, my knees have never felt better! My husband and I are also trying to start a family, but my PCOS was not going to make it as easy as 1,2,3, as I didn't have periods on my own. My doctor had told me if I wanted a baby, I HAD to lose weight. Since losing 40lbs, I've had regular cycles for the first time in my life! Which is very important when trying to have a baby ;) This journey of mine is more than me simply wanting to wear skinny jeans. It has been a quest to becoming :Deliciously Healthy, so ALL of my dreams can come true! I'm almost half way there! With each new day, I get closer and closer to my goal of 120lbs, and becoming :Deliciously Healthy!

The Good. The Bad. And The Ugly.

I'm going to start backwards, because I'm cool like that ;)

The Ugly:

Today's weigh in had me at 170, for a 1 pound gain.

Sigh...

Once again, it was a good week. Then again, I've been having a lot of good weeks, and I feel like I have nothing to show for it.
I ate good all week, other then maybe 2 times where I ate a little something that probably wasn't diet friendly. I've been exercising, and going on a long walk each night with my hubs and the dogs.

I've been in the 170's for 3 months!
But all I can do, is all I can do.
I'll keep giving it my best, and whatever the scale tells me, so be it :)

The Bad:

I had a doctors appointment last week. While I was there, she had me do a ton of labs, so she could follow up on everything like my lupus, RA, etc...

A few years ago, I was diagnosed with low thyroid (Hypothyroidism). A while after being diagnosed, I got follow up blood work done, and the results came back showing that my thyroid levels were normal. My doctor had explained that once you have low thyroid, you'll always have it, but that mine had gone inactive in a sense.

Well, the lab results from last week, showed that
my low thyroid is back.
My doctor said that it's, "crazy low"!

Now, it seems obvious, as I've been feeling a bit... funky these past 2-3 months.

Here are some of the symptoms, of low thyroid:

(Since thyroid hormone is responsible for the regulation of your body's metabolism, its deficiency results in slowing down of your body's metabolic processes, causing some of these symptoms)
  • Fatigue -check
  • Tiredness -check
  • Sluggishness -check
  • Weakness -check
  • Lack of concentration -check
  • Forgetfulness -check
  • Depression -I wouldn't say I've been depressed, but I have been a little blue
  • irritability -depends on who you ask: me, or my husband ;)
  • Weight gain -CHECK
  • Dry skin -check
  • Brittle nails -nope
  • Hair loss -I don't think so?!
  • Face puffiness -I have been noticing that my face looks a little... puffy
  • Irregular periods -That one is hard to tell, due to my PCOS. For the first time I'd say that they're pretty regular...but they're still not normal.
  • breathlessness (with low thyroid your muscles become weak, including your respiratory muscles) -check
  • Achy muscles -check
I've been having these symptoms for the past 2-3 months.... I should have gotten my labs done then, but didn't. I just tried to push them aside. I thought I was just being lazy, or that it was all in my head.
Brittany, Brittany, Brittany, what am I going to do with you? ;)

When I first got diagnosed, my doctor explained that it was extremely hard to lose weight if you have low thyroid that is going untreated.

I feel like I've been trying to lose weight, while fighting this invisible current.
Sigh...

I'm waiting for my prescription to be filled. Hopefully with the meds, my thyroid will get back to normal soon, so I can start having my energy back, and hopefully see some weight loss!

The Good:

I'm still here, and I haven't given up!

I've been trying to lose weight while having low thyroid, that has been going untreated. It's been a difficult 3 months, with lots of effort, and little weight loss.

But, I'm still here!

I'm going to go ahead and give myself a pat on the back for that!

You're right - you do deserve a pat on the back for sticking to it. It's HARD to keep doing the right thing and not see the results you want. You're doing awesome girl - keep it up!!!

Liza is right. Putting in that much effort and not making progress must have been daunting. Well done for hanging in there.

Once your health is sorted out, hopefully it will be a lot easier for you.

My mom had thyroid cancer so I know some about how having a thyroid all wacky can make things weird.

I do hope you can get it all figured out but I am glad you are still here and going strong.

You look great and I am proud of you in all parts of your life.

I'm laughing at your previous post in the dress, cause you are just too cute!
Sorry about the thyroid, but you must be relieved that you know SOMETHING has been going on that you can (hopefully) fix.

Sorry to hear about the thyroid issue! I hope that the medicine will help you with the tiredness and everything. I'm sure your weight loss will kick back in soon...don't get discouraged! You are doing wonderful things for your body!

I'm incredibly proud of you for not giving up!!!!

My mom has a low thyroid and she gives up all too often. Keep plugging away and you know that weight will eventually come off. :)

You look beautiful in that photo. Your smile is so bright and happy!

This was a good lesson for you to listen to your body and if you're feeling out of sorts, go to the doctor. I hope you start feeling back to normal soon.

I have a low thyroid too so I can relate... I was a little angry at first knowing I'll have to be on meds forever BUT I am thankful that they help my body metabolize the way it's supposed to. I hope once you get back on the meds your weight will start to "fall off" again:) I've been stuck for about 3 months as well, and it can be SO frustrating BUT like you, I'm not giving up! Someday SOON the scale will move again... as long as I maintain my healthy habits!
Happy I've found your blog:)
