About Moi
My Name is Brittany, and I'm 23yrs old. I was diagnosed with Lupus when I was 15, and then diagnosed with RA, when I was 18. I also got married when I was 18, and I'm enjoying my happily ever after with my hubby! When I got married, I was slim and trim...But not for long. After getting married, I started to gain a LOT of weight! In 1yr, I gained 50lbs! Finally, I went to the Doctor, where I discovered I have low thyroid. After being put on medicine, my weight gain slowed down, although over the next 3yrs, I gained an additional 26lbs. When I was 20yrs old, I got yet another diagnoses of Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome. That's 4 diagnoses in a 5yr period, if you lost count. They all effect my weight, in one way or another. Add on top of that, my love affair with food, and every 1 of those 76lbs gained was accounted for. Being 76lbs over weight is unhealthy for anyone, but it was especially unhealthy for me, and my health issues. Since starting this blog, in Jan-2010, I have lost 40lbs! I'm a new, slimmer, and healthier me! Before losing weight, I was told I needed knee replacements. Losing weight was the ONLY tool I had to help me hold off on that life changing surgery. Since losing 40lbs, my knees have never felt better! My husband and I are also trying to start a family, but my PCOS was not going to make it as easy as 1,2,3, as I didn't have periods on my own. My doctor had told me if I wanted a baby, I HAD to lose weight. Since losing 40lbs, I've had regular cycles for the first time in my life! Which is very important when trying to have a baby ;) This journey of mine is more than me simply wanting to wear skinny jeans. It has been a quest to becoming :Deliciously Healthy, so ALL of my dreams can come true! I'm almost half way there! With each new day, I get closer and closer to my goal of 120lbs, and becoming :Deliciously Healthy!

The truth about artificial sweeteners

I saw this incredibly informative video on FaceBook. Gotta love FB.

What makes this video so awesome, is that it breaks down all the chemicals in sugar substitutes. It explains what those chemicals actually are, and what they do to our bodies. Chemicals like aspartame, acetone, methanol, among others:

What did I get from this video? Oh, just that artificial sweeteners are basically just sugar with chlorine, nail polish remover, gasoline, windshield washer fluid, and formaldehyde in it. Sweet (pun not intended, but welcomed:).

It's amazing to me how many "diet" cook books include these artificial sweeteners.

And I can't believe how much diet Dr. Pepper I used to drink. It's crazy.

Here are Dr. Freedmen's picks for the 3 best sweeteners:

***
A couple weeks ago we decided to put a patio in the backyard. When the patio was finally done, we realized they had made a ton of mistakes. Now they're having to tare it out, and do it again. When it is all said and done, it will have taken them almost 2 weeks from start to finish. That's 2 weeks of not being able to let the dogs out back to do their business. That equals a ton of walking for moi. I've had to take them on a walk 4-6 times a day. sigh.

Moral of the story: putting in a patio is the best thing to ever happen to my diet and exercise plan.

LOL! That's a positive way to look at what must be a very frustrating situation. But just think about how nice it will be to have a patio this summer!

Artificial sweeteners are EVIL! Honestly, if you want to cut back on the sugar, just cut it out of your diet... that's what I tell people who are trying to lose weight. Artificial sweeteners can even speed up the development of diabetes - who'd have thought? Unfortunately I can't watch the video right now, but I'll make sure to do so tonight, and maybe forward it to the BF (who loves to drink "diet" stuff all the time) - thanks for sharing!

I agree...evil. One of my co-workers overdosed on Splenda (yes this was medically proven) and was in a coma for something like a week. It was back when it first came out and the Atkins was all the rage...

I don't touch the stuff, gives me aweful migraines.

Agave is the best! Or good old fashioned Honey in moderation.

I'm a true believer, that despire the extra calories that are in 'real' products (mainly sugar and butter) I'd rather use them than shave off calories. I use plain sugar in my coffee. I'll use oil or butter when I cook. I eat full fat icecream or mayo when I eat it. Eating REAL food in moderation is key of course, but I'd rather that than loading up on crappy stuff just so I can save some calories to eat more crappy stuff. You know what I mean? lol

Totally. :)

Oh my goodness! I can't even imagine a patio project like that - you are brave as heck, lady.

As for diet sweeteners, etc. I read the book Skinny Bitch a few years ago. Mostly it was a scary vegan/raw food manifesto that wasn't really applicable to me.

The one message that really stuck was, if you see a food advertised as "diet" or "low-fat", the first thing you need to think to yourself is "chemical shit storm."

Crass, but so true.

It is very very good that you post these video clips. I just hope more people watch this video clips and be extra careful with what they eat. As Dr.Freedmen said about the 3 best sugar substitutes, I am currently using the Stevia sweeteners, called Natvia. It is natural and doesn't have aspartame and saccharine. It is also, not a diet or calorie zero products, that it's "real" natural sweeteners. I am very happy with my choice and it is the best to stick to natural stuffs, the natural sweetener Natvia.
